The Glanbia/Kepak Twenty20 Beef Club has made the final cut in the 5th edition of the European Award for Cooperative Innovation.

The programme is among three shortlisted in the Economic Value Creation – Support for Farmer Members category of the European Award organised by Cogeca. Fellow competitors shortlisted are Dairygold Cooperative and AGROCAT in Spain.

The winners of each of the six categories in the Europe-wide competition will be selected at the end of March but due to COVID restrictions, the winners will not be announced until the official awards ceremony which will not take place until later in the year.

Commenting on reaching the final, Head of Beef at Glanbia, Martin Ryan, said: “This is a huge honour. The Twenty20 Beef Club was developed with the core purpose of improving the economic, social and environmental sustainability of dairy calf-to-beef production.

“Today calves processed are achieving an average €100 more than non-club animals and are guaranteed a market. This focus couldn’t have come at a better time as we’ve just launched our new Calf Locator App in conjunction with the ICBF. All Club members are eligible to use it,” he said.

The financial loan product, MilkFlex, is a previous winner for Glanbia, taking the Cooperative Innovation award in the same Europe-wide competition in 2017.
