Teagasc/Glanbia Future Farm Walks

The Future Farm Programme is the third evolution of the Teagasc / Glanbia Ireland knowledge transfer programme.

It will harness advancements in technology and farm practices to support farmers to make the necessary changes for a profitable and sustainable future.

 

The agenda for the day will be as follows:

  1. Introduction (Sandra Hayes/Host Farmer) - Review of breeding plans and policies with host farmer and plans for the future.
  2. ICBF - New updates on sire advice, bull teams, dairy calf index, sex semen.
  3. Animal Health (George Ramsbottom/Joris Somers) - Importance of milk recording, calving reports and using that data for the herd plus herd health.
  4. Sustainability (Teagasc/Thomas Ryan) - Breeding for the Future Herd and the Glanbia Sustainability Action Payment, scheme details.

Donal is farming near Baltinglass Co. Wicklow. He is farming 154Ha of which 45Ha are owned. He has a milking platform of 68Ha. He milked 258 cows in 2019. He had a winter milk contract & he calves around 70 cows in the Autumn. The plan is to milk 220 cows & keep 60 replacement units. For more on Donal click here.

Shay is farming outside New Ross in Co. Wexford. Shay farms 70 Ha. The milking platform is 47 Ha. There is also a beef enterprise on the farm. The plan is to exit beef & increase cow numbers to 160 & to rear 40 replacement units. For more on Shay click here.
